Biweekly Hours: 80.00

Shift: 7 a - 3:30p, M-F. Rotating on-call responsib.

Job Summary:

Ensures the efficient operation and effective supervision of the Specimen Processing area of the Laboratory. Coordinates and directs the activities of all the daily pre-analytical and post-analytical operations including specimen receiving, specimen processing, send-out testing, order reconciliation, specimen archival and customer service. Upholds the mission, vision, values, and customer service standards of The MetroHealth System.

Responsibilities:

Oversees, supports, and makes contributions to patient safety by:

a. Providing a safe environment for patients.

b. Identifying and correcting root causes of errors.

c. Implementing systems to prevent errors.

d. Subscribing to the principles of responsible reporting of adverse occurrences, near misses, and safety concerns.

e. Providing evidence-based care.

1. Oversees the daily performance of the technical and non-technical staff in the pre-analytic area and is responsible for monitoring and regulating the staff in their performance of delegated duties.

• Works with appropriate staff to develop employee performance standards to ensure optimal work-flow efficiency.

• Develops and implements orientation and training programs; ensures adequate on-the-job training of all assigned employees.

• Assists staff with problems to minimize delays in testing and service delivery.

• Contributes to staff development, training and education for appropriate staff.

• Recommends or exercises discipline, recognition and hiring.

• Schedules staff to ensure coverage; completes work schedules in a timely manner in accordance with Hospital policies.

• Maintains accurate time keeping records for payroll and attendance; monitors corrections to employee timecards; upholds and implements MHS attendance policy standards

• Oversees reference laboratory testing including the sending of appropriate specimens, guaranteeing the proper testing occurs through active review, and verifying that the testing occurs in a timely manner.

2. Implements and enforces system, procedures, and policies in support of regulatory standard , institutional mission and values, and safety requirements.

• Assures that there is an adequate quality assurance program in Pre-Analytic areas and supports continuous improvement.

• Participates in departmental quality improvement programs; coordinates data collection and analysis for quality improvement/assurance reports as required; implements changes to work- flows/protocols in response to identified operational problems.

• Responsible for section compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies.

• Enforces proper workplace safety guidelines for the Pre-Analytic areas and MHS staff, and other authorized individuals when in the Laboratory by following standard infection control precautions and special handling needs, by ensuring that the physical plant, equipment, and instruments support task performance, and by limiting and controlling access to the laboratory space.

• Reviews and updates all laboratory test procedures in a timely manner; confers with appropriate staff for advice and approval of procedural changes.

• Resolves inter- and intra-departmental problems in a timely, systematic, and diplomatic manner.

3. Participates in the development and implementation of programs to improve customer service.

• Provides on-going customer service monitoring and reports findings at the Departmental Performance Improvement meetings.

• Assists in developing service goals, customer satisfaction parameters and key performance areas for the pre-analytic area.

• Assists to develop unique ways to communicate and document information (critical values and cancellations) to clinical personnel.

• In response to physician and customer surveys, participates on teams to develop, implement, and monitor actin plan elements to increase satisfaction.

• Serves as a resource and liaison to Clinical Departments, regarding specimen submission criteria.

4. Demonstrates mutual respect toward all staff, patients, and visitors to promote a positive environment and effective laboratory operations by:

• Approaching challenges in a positive, proactive, and constructive manner.

• Supporting/fulfilling departmental/organizational goals and objectives.

• Interacting with all patients, staff, fellow employees, and management staff in a pleasant and professional manner at all times.

5. Remains current with advances and management developments in related fields; serves as a technical resource for theoretical/practical aspects of mortality policies/procedures

6. Prepares assigned area(s) of the laboratory for successful inspections by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and The Joint Commission (TJC). Directly participates in the survey.

7. Communicates the state of assigned area(s) to Pathology Administration on a frequent and regular basis.

8. Provides and accepts backup support to/from Pathology Management Team peers as assigned, in an effort to balance workload across all Pathology Sections. .

Qualifications:

Specimen Processing Supervisor

Required:

2 Year/Associate Degree, Science related field preferred

Experience in a highly complex Hospital Laboratory setting

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

Strong computer skills
